Writer's picture: Brandi AustinBrandi Austin

The moveable alphabet is a tangible alphabet consisting of wooden letters. It contains several copies of each letter, the consonants in red and the vowels in blue. This material is one of the four original language materials designed by Maria Montessori, and is used to for spelling, reading and writing. Once the child has mastered several of the sandpaper letters, they begin to spell words with the moveable alphabet, often well before developing the fine motor control necessary to write letters with paper and pencil.
